My take – You can fire as part of your action/bonus action/reaction and reload as an action or bonus action. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make. A character must then reload it using an action or a bonus action (the character’s choice). A limited number of shots can be made with a weapon that has the reload property.

Reloading – There are a few different rules in the PHB and DMG for reloading, I have consolidated and clarified them here. Some complicated weapons misfire on rolls higher than 1, see individual weapon entries for details.Įxploding dice! – When you roll the maximum number on a die (a 6 on a D6, a 4 on a D4), you roll that die again and add it to the first, giving the potential for damage spikes! If your check fails, the weapon is jammed and must be repaired outside of combat, a task requiring 10 minutes of work. Repairing a firearm requires a successful DC 10 Tinker’s Tool check. You cannot use the weapon again until you spend an action to repair it. Misfire! Whenever you make an attack roll with a firearm, and roll a 1 on the die, the weapon misfires. Those who emulate the archetypal Gunmaster are natural savants with firearms either employing martial techniques passed down through generations or displaying a wild, creative talent with their chosen weapons.
